By 1973, the airport reached a certain milestone when almost 3 million passengers and about 5 million baggage pieces was handled by the airport. That was one of Colombian aviation industry’s best year. That year, it has also become clear that the airport’s continuous growth means that the creation of the 2nd runway was really essential.

By 1981, Avianca has started to build Puente Aereo, its own passenger terminal. This was opened by then President Julio Cesar Turbay Ayala.

By 1998, Bogota Airport’s 2nd runway was formally opened.

By the 10th of December 1998, Avianca also opened officially its Bogota Airport’s hub. It offered 6000 connections every week
